Student Advisement

Academic advising is designed to empower students to take ownership of their educational journey. Our goal is to provide personalized guidance that helps you to:

  • Understand your degree requirements and academic options
  • Make informed decisions about course selection and scheduling
  • Stay on track for timely graduation
  • Connect your academic plan with your career goals
  • Navigate university policies, procedures, and resources
  • Build confidence and independence as a learner and future professional

Whether you’re exploring a major in Education, preparing for teacher certification, or planning for graduation, academic advising is here to support your success—every step of the way.

Who We Serve

Advisors in the Center for Student Success and Educator Excellence (CSSEE) are dedicated to supporting students who have declared or want to declare a major in Educational Foundations for Elementary Teachers.

We also work with students from across the different colleges at Montclair State University (CART, CCHL, CHSS, and CSAM) who are pursuing teacher certification and have been admitted into the Teacher Education Program.

Meeting with your Academic Advisor

All advisors are available to meet with you in-person, virtually, or by phone. You can set up an appointment with your advisor on Navigate via NEST.

New First Year Students in Educational Foundations for Elementary Teachers (EFET) Major

Your advisor will create your first schedule prior to you starting your first semester at Montclair and will reach out to you throughout that process.

New Transfer Students in Educational Foundations for Elementary Teachers (EFET) Major

The Department of Educational Foundations will reach out to you about scheduling your New Transfer Student Onboarding Appointment. During this initial meeting, you will review your evaluated transfer credits and set up your schedule for your first semester at MSU.
Teacher Education Program Students and Prospective Students

The mission of the Office of Teacher Education Advisement and Retention is to provide Teacher Education Program students with the information, guidance, and support they need to successfully complete their degree and meet New Jersey state teacher certification requirements. We are committed to delivering high-quality, personalized advising that reflects the unique needs and goals of each of our students.

Who Should Schedule an Appointment?
All students who have been admitted to the undergraduate Single Certification or Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s (B/MAT) Teacher Education Program—including transfer students—should schedule an appointment with their assigned Program Advisor on Navigate.
