Grant Programs

Noyce Secondary Teacher Education at Montclair for STEM (STEM-4-STEM) Program

(For graduate and undergraduate mathematics, chemistry, physics, earth science, and biology future teachers)

This program is dedicated to recruiting, preparing, and supporting new science teachers for New Jersey’s high-need K-12 school districts. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation and offers two years of scholarships for undergraduate students or one year for graduate students equal to the amount of New Jersey in-state tuition and fees, as well as an annual stipend of $2000 to prospective mathematics, chemistry, physics, earth science, and biology majors admitted into the Montclair State University Teacher Education Program. For more information, visit the STEM-4-STEM Program.

Noyce @ Montclair Mathematics Project Scholarship

This scholarship program aims to prepare students to become effective elementary mathematics teaching in New Jersey’s high-need K-12 schools.  Scholars in this program obtain an undergraduate degree in mathematics along with a K-6 elementary teaching certification. Each Noyce @ Montclair scholar receive a $13,000 scholarship and a $660 stipend each year for two years with additional money available for local conference travel. In return for the funds, students agree to work two years in a high-needs school in NJ for each year of funding received (if you receive funds for both years you would work 4 years in that school). Montclair State University has numerous scholarship opportunities available to students enrolled in the Teacher Education Program. Students are notified of scholarships and deadline dates in late fall and early spring of each year.

Endowed Scholarships

General Undergraduate Scholarships:

Ed & Jean Cooper Scholarship
Awarded to a qualifying undergraduate student enrolled in the College of Education and Human Services Teacher Education Program.

Robert Pines Scholarship
Awarded to an honors program student enrolled in either the Elementary or Secondary Teacher Education Program.

Kathryn E. Stilwell Memorial Award
Awarded to a full-time sophomore or junior who exhibits potential for success in the teaching profession. Students must have 3.0 or better GPA and must demonstrate leadership, financial need, and involvement in campus/community activities. Priority is given to Bergen County residents.

Humanities and Social Studies Undergraduate Scholarships:

(English, History, Languages, Psychology, Geography, Political Science, or Sociology)

Craig & Arlene Crescenzi Allen Scholarship
Awarded to a rising junior or prospective senior with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and who plans to teach in the humanities. This scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.

Edward & Barbara Buhrer Scholarship
Awarded to one full-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Social Studies or English who is in their student teaching semester with minimum 3.5 GPA and proven financial need.

Paula Haas Dotson Scholarship
Available to support a scholarship to a student with a passion for English education who is in the teacher certification program (the recipient could be a student who excels in English education, literature, composition, English as a Second Language, reading, etc.). Preference given to a junior year student. The student must have financial need and exhibit promise as a future educator.

Science and Math Undergraduate Scholarships:

Richard A. Bard Endowed Scholarship in Science Education
Awarded to a qualified undergraduate science major enrolled in the Teacher Preparation Program. This scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.

Miano Science & Math Teacher Education Scholarship
Awarded to one full-time undergraduate Science/Math major who will be a senior in the forthcoming semester the scholarship is awarded. Preference given to student majoring in Chemistry.

George & Dorothy Hennings Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to one undergraduate student enrolled full-time pursuing certification in the sciences with a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Dr. Elton Robertson Technology Scholarship
Awarded to one full-time undergraduate mathematics major in their student teaching semester to assist in the purchase of technology or software for classroom use. Applicants must submit an additional one-page essay outlining how the technology will be used in the classroom.

Undergraduate/Graduate Scholarships:

Ruth Lewin Endowment Fund
Awarded to a graduate/undergraduate student who demonstrates financial need.

Nicholas and Susan Michelli Memorial Award
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student who demonstrates commitment to a career in urban education.

David Seltzer Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to provide much-needed aid to qualifying undergraduate and graduate students who aspire to and are enrolled in the Teacher Certification Program to become English as a Second Language Teachers. Students must be participating and/or are enrolled in one of these programs in the College of Education and Human Services that provide specialized training to work effectively with students who are English Language Learners: Teach English Language Learners Program, Bilingual Bicultural Education Endorsement Program, Reading and Literacy Education Program

Teacher’s Club of Montclair Scholarship
Awarded to 10 juniors and 5 graduate students admitted to the Teacher Education Program who demonstrate excellence in the program.

Graduate Scholarships:

Anne Kirby Memorial Scholarship Fund
Awarded to a fully matriculated M.Ed. or MAT student preparing for a career in teaching. Student must have a strong GPA and must provide a one-page essay outlining one’s educational goals.

Clinical Internship Scholarships:

Awarded to support students during their Clinical II Internship semester.

Arlene Allen Student Teacher Scholarship
Awarded to three (3) undergraduate or graduate student teachers in good academic standing who demonstrate financial need.

Charles and Dorothy Farinella Scholarship
Awarded to full-time undergraduate or graduate students pursuing Teacher Certification who will be in their student teaching semester. Minimum GPA average of 3.0 and have proven financial need..

Michael and Marianne Autorino Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to full-time undergraduate students who are enrolled in the teacher education program with a grade point average of at least 3.0. The recipient should be in their student teaching semester.

Byron and Myrtis Yake Student Teacher Scholarship
Awarded to an undergraduate student in the student teaching semester.

Nel & James Noddings Scholarship
Awarded to one or more full-time undergraduate student(s) preparing to become math teachers and who are in their student teaching semester with min. 3.0 cumulative GPA. This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.

Please note that additional awards may become available, and that academic departments, the Graduate School, the Financial Aid Office, and CEEL also have scholarship and grant opportunities.Not all awards may be available during a given year.


Federal Grants

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is a federal grant that provides up to $4,000 per year to students who agree to teach for four years at an elementary school, secondary school or educational service agency that serves students from low-income families and in high need areas. Current high need areas in schools that serve low-income families) are:

  • Bilingual Education and English Language Acquisition
  • Foreign Language
  • Mathematics
  • Reading Specialist
  • Science
  • Special Education
  • Other Identified Teacher Shortage Areas (not geographic areas) as of the time recipients receive the grant, or as of the time they begin teaching in that field. The “other identified teacher shortage areas” can be found in this publication of Teacher Shortage Areas.

Federal Loan Forgiveness Program

Under the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program, if you teach full-time for five complete and consecutive academic years in a low-income school or educational service agency, and meet other qualifications, you may be eligible for forgiveness of up to $17,500 on your Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans and your Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans.
